The resume is your marketing
tool and should clearly demonstrate what you offer the
company. In other words, it should answer "why" a company
should hire you. What do you offer? How can you improve their
operations, profitability or help them grow? And, it should
compel the reader to want to learn even more about you!
Resume Design Tips
Hiring Managers prefer a crisp looking
resume that gets right to the point and can demonstrate
accomplishments. In other words, what do you offer the
company. When writing your resume, do not use the personal
pronoun "I" and do not include personal information such as
marital status, age, etc. We have provided a resume template
below that will improve the style and substance of your
resume.
Length
The rule of thumb is
one page for early/entry level career candidates and two pages
for mid-career candidates. If you have a scientific or very
advanced career, your resume may end up multiple pages in
length and include publications, patents, etc. This is called
a CV (Curriculum Vitae).
Layout
The first section should be a summary
of your qualifications and personal attributes. Then add
interest and clarity by using indentations, bullets and vary
the font sizes (just don't get too fancy!).
Do not use photos or graphics.
Job Experience
Provide relevant details about your current and
past employers, such as size and scope of the organization,
physical location and product line.
Job and Education Dates
Make sure the dates are clear, including month
and year.
If there are employment gaps, they may be explained in your
cover letter; i.e. returned to school to complete Master's
Degree.
Measurables
Show your reporting relationships and
achievements with actual numbers. For example, do not say
reduced scrap by 35% in first year. State that you "reduced
scrap resulting in a savings of $150,000 the first year"
instead. Measurables are more meaningful when stated in actual
dollars, headcounts, etc. and not percentages.
Your Degree
PLEASE be ACCURATE and
HONEST. Mis-representing a degree is the most common error on
resumes and the consequences could result in your employment
termination or the job not being offered. Typically, degrees
are verified by the hiring employer. Embarrassing!
