Smooth Move Checklist!
BEFORE YOU LEAVE:
ADDRESS CHANGE
o
Post Office: Give Forwarding Address.
o
Change Accounts, Credit Cards.
o
Subscriptions: Notice requires several weeks.
BANK
o Transfer funds, arrange check-cashing in new city.
o
Arrange credit references.
INSURANCE
o Notify company of new location for coverages: Life,
Health, Fire, and Auto.
UTILITY COMPANIES
o Gas, light, water, telephone, fuel, garbage.
o
Get refunds on any deposits made.
DELIVERY
o Laundry, newspaper, change over of services.
MEDICAL, DENTAL, PRESCRIPTION
HISTORIES
o Ask Doctor and Dentist for referrals; transfer needed
prescriptions, eyeglasses, X-rays
o Obtain birth
records, medical records, etc.
PETS
o Ask about regulations for licenses, vaccinations, tags,
etc.
AND ON MOVING DAY:
o Carry enough cash or travelers checks to cover cost of
moving services and expenses until you make banking connections in
new city.
o Carry jewelry and documents yourself or use registered
mail.
o Plan for transporting pets. They are poor traveling
companions if unhappy.
o Carry travelers checks for quick, available funds.
o Let close friend or relative know route and schedule you
will travel including overnight stops, use him or her as message
headquarters.
o Double check closets, drawers, shelves to be sure they
are empty.
o Leave all old keys needed by new tenant or owner with
Realtor or neighbor.
AND AT YOUR NEW ADDRESS:
o Obtain certified check or cashiers check necessary for
closing Real Estate transaction.
o Check on service of telephone, gas, electricity, water,
and garbage.
o Check pilot light on stove, hot water heater, and
furnace.
o Have appliances checked.
o Ask mailman for mail he may be holding for your arrival.
o Have new address recorded on driver’s license.
o Visit city offices and register to vote.
o Register car within 5 days after arrival in state or a
penalty may have to be paid when getting new plates.
o Obtain inspection sticker and transfer motor club
membership.
o Apply for state drivers license.
o Register family in your new place of worship.
o Register children in school.
o Arrange for medical
services; Doctor, Dentist, Veterinarian, etc.
